13th – 15th May 2018
Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal

Programme (pdf)

On 13-15 May 2018 the third International Exergy Economics Workshop (IEEW 2018) was held at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon, Portugal.

Building on the success of the first two workshops at the University of Leeds in 2014 and the University of Sussex in 2016, the event brought together stakeholders and researchers in the field. 40 attendees gathered to discuss current research in the field of exergy economics, and map out new research collaborations across the 8 workshop themes:

  1. Economics – I: Creating exergy-economy modelling frameworks
  2. Human Well-Being: Linking useful exergy to human well-being and development
  3. Industry: Exergy mapping at the industrial scale
  4. History: Constructing and long-run World Primary-Final-Useful (WPFU) exergy dataset
  5. Economics – II: The role of energy efficiency in economic growth
  6. Analysis: Applying a physical supply use table (PSUT) framework approach to exergy
  7. Materials: Developing an exergy framework for sustainable materials
  8. Engagement: Having greater impact on the mainstream modelling-to-policy chain

Funding was generously provided by three Portuguese sponsors:  the Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under project UID/EEA/50009/2013,  and the Association of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST-ID), based in Lisbon, Portugal. Additional funding was also gratefully received from the Centre on Innovation and Energy Demand (CIED) and the Centre for Industrial Energy, Materials and Products (CIE-MAP), both part of the RCUK Energy Use and Energy Demand Centres (EUED) network, and the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC).
